We had a great time tonight at Heritage House! I’m not sure what time they stop taking food orders, but we called at 8:30pm when we were 20 mins away and they still took us. They never once made us feel rushed or hurried, and the food (shrimp cocktail, medium filet and rare prime rib) was EXCELLENT!!! Their hospitality was top notch and kept us comfortable until we left at 10:15pm. Thank you!
Great Friday Fish Fry. Every table gets a relish tray or two. Nice way to start the meal. Great cocktail and a friendly atmosphere. Also a piano player tinkling the ivories.
A couple weeks ago my wife and I were driving back from Chicago to our home in Wisconsin, when we noticed a huge traffic slowdown ahead due to snow. I quickly exited I-90 at Morton Grove. I drove north to Hwy 14 and decided to head to Janesville to bypass the slowdown. By the time we got to Harvard, I didn't want to drive in the dark while it was still snowing. Too hypnotic! So I said, "Here's a motel." It was the Baymont Inn, which was a disaster. The room was good, but they don't run the recirculating pump for the hot water. It took three minutes to get the 120 degree "hot" water to the tub. Then the tub drain was plugged, so the clerk had to come down and clean it out. They keep the hallways, lobby, dining room and pool area quite cold.Anyway, avoid the Baymont Inn.
BUT... we went to the Heritage House supper Club which was right next door, and it was just a lovely experience. The atmosphere, food and staff were stellar. We had the rainbow trout, which was perfectly seasoned. It was snowing so only about five groups came in (the hard core people), but this place would have been packed on a clear night. When the piano player came in, we went over and sat next to him and conversed with him for about ten minutes. Then we returned to the disaster motel.
Friendly and efficient staff. Nice home made relish tray. Really liked the beet and red onion salad. Unusual summer sausage and liver spread. Not a big liver fan but that spread was pretty good. I liked their choice of butter from Natures Best Dairy. Had the lentil soup which was okay and not too salty. We went German as Sunday is when they make their German dishes. The Sauerbraten was nice and tender and not too sour. The Spaetzle had a pleasant fried flavor and not too greasy and the red cabbage was really nice and not runny. The Rouladen was pretty good. A little bland. The pickle inside could have had little more flavor. However the gravy, green beans with almonds and mashed potatoes were great. Overall good German food for a fair price.
On a Sunday night THIS is THE place to be if you want a supper club experience with authentically German food. The relish tray is exactly what it should be. We had the sausage plate (regular menu) and the roulade (they were out of the sauerbraten unfortunately, both from the Sunday specials). The crowd is decidedly older (I get the feeling kiddos aren't welcome) but it was really delicious, the service is great, and the vibe is perfect.
The only comment I have is that I don't know if I would order dessert here again. The brandy wasn't especially well incorporated into our brandy Alexander, and the apple strudel was very soggy, though it tasted nice.
But the beet relish! And the kraut! And the German beers! All. So. Good.
